The Department of Labor (DOL) has issued a Request for Information (RFI), asking for public comments on its interpretation of the reasonable break time for employed nursing mothers. The public comments will help guide the DOL in implementing the new law contained in the Affordable Care Act. The RFI itself sets out the DOL’s current interpretation of the law, but there are a number of questions and situations on which the DOL would like input. The deadline for comments is February 22, 2011. So much has been said about avoiding the sun to prevent skin cancer. We wear hats, and use SPF to prevent sun damage– and what has happened we are developing problems due to Vitamin D Deficiency. Newest recommendation is 10 minutes exposure of sun a day - in a bathing suit– will provide you with the daily requirement for Vitamin D. So grab your bathing suit and take 10 minutes a day to relax and take your Vitamin D while the weather is so beautiful. For those rainy days look to Cod Liver Oil it is loaded in Vitamin D. xxxxx Lonnie

Mountainside Hospital

I have found the hospital that I can practice in without having to fight to allow women to deliver their babies. We have had really wonderful births and women are free to move, shower, walk or just be in labor. It is wonderful to finally find a women’s centered hospital. We are moving and have changed our hospital. We have finally found a new home. Mountainside Hospital is a wonderful hospital that supports women’s desire to birth babies appropriately. The hospital has a NICU and supports early discharge and the model of care that you desire. I am so excited to finally be able to offer the care that you so deserve. H1N1 Vaccines for Mom

Good question EM– I am not sure what the real answer is. The recommendation for the Flu Shot is still the same– give to health care providers, pregnant women, the elderly, children and those that have chronic conditions ie asthma. This has not changed. The studies are still not completed on the H1N1 have not been completed and the availability is questionable. Most of my population is watching and waiting and not sure if they want the H1N1 vaccine or not. I am trying to read everything possible so as to educate myself and my patient population. Lonnie

Hey Lonnie,Just trying to pick you brain about a new hot topic. James and I are trying for # 2 of the”Massiveness”. My workplace has just mandated the H1N1 to all those who have direct contact with patients. I took the regular flu shot already but as you know H1N1 is not yet here. I know its recommended for all those expecting but don’t know the research - if any has been done on the effects to the baby.Thanks,EM

We had 5 fabulous births this week. One birth was better than the next. Really proved to me that watchful waiting is the way to go. Wonderful week filled with wonderful families that had great babies. Could anything get better? Women are so strong and amazing. Lonnie
